Riverside Township’s Lions Club is collecting used eyeglasses, including old prescriptio glasses, and non prescription glasses, as part of the 2010 Lions in Sight Day,

Lions Clubs around the state, country and world participate in this day to showcase the Lions Club’s work in sight and provide used eyeglasses for those who need eye glasses.

From 9 a.m. to noon this month, you are warmly welcome to donate your use to Lions Cluy, and the eyeglasses collection will take place at the North Riverside Village Commons, 2401 S. Des Plaines Avenue in North Riverside, and the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road.

Lions Club members will explain the club’s purpose and activities, at the same time they will collect the used eye glasses.

Need more optometrist to check eyeglasses prescription for the poor

Eyeglasses are as old as the Renaissance, but even now we still need trained professionals to fit them, it’s a nightmare for developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, there’s only one optometrist for around 1 million people. There optmetrists and eye doctors are badly needly to check eyeglasses pescription for the local people. That’s no problem for the Western world, such as USA, which has around one optometrist for roughly every 10,000 people. People in USA can get their glasses prescription very quickly.

So I think we should do something for the people there, we can gather our unwanted eyeglasses, recheck the used glasses and sent them to the poor people. If we can collect a lot of eyeglasses, we also can sent some optometrist work there so that the people there can get more correct prescription glassses.

Chicago man charged with stealing $45,000 worth of designer glasses

Lowery, 38, of Chicago told Wisconsin officials last weekend that he stealed $45,000 worth of high quality designer eyeglasses from suburban Milwaukee stores.

In 1996, Chicago police arrested Lowery for stealing designer eyeglass frames from seven stores over four months. He served prison time after pleading guilty to six counts of aggravated robbery. After his release, he was arrested yet again after stealing more fancy designer eyeglasses frames, according to court records.

In each case, Lowery brandished a toy gun and ordered an employee to fill a bag with designer eyeglasses.

Lowery sold the glasses to a Highland Park man for $30 apiece, who then resold them in his Chicago shop for hundreds more.

According to The Associated Press, Lowery told officials that — though he stole the glasses — he simply likes to try on Prada and Gucci-made pairs in front of a mirror, then toss them away.

He was charged with three counts of armed robbery and one count of fleeing an officer, court records show.

Lions Club looking for used eyeglasses again

The Los Gatos Lions Club is collecting used eyeglasses it can recycle and give to needy people around the world.

The glasses collected are taken to a warehouse in Vallejo where they are cleaned and machine-graded by prescription. The glasses are then sent with Lions Club members on eyeglass missions, where volunteer eye doctors perform exams. The Lions then read the doctors’ prescriptions and match them up with eyeglasses from the inventory they have brought along.

If you have any used eyeglasses, you can send them to Lions Club, the used eyeglasses is useless for you, but they are very useful for others.

At the same time, I hope the eyeglasses shop can offer their out-of-data eyeglasses to the poor people, we shoud help each other, let this world becomes more beautiful.
